First off, shoutout to Patricia an absolute queen who helped us secure a last-minute reservation. Truly made the experience happen for us. The restaurant itself is stunning. The decor felt so warm and homey while still feeling special. Standout dishes for us were the flan, peppers, and asparagus all absolutely fabulous. The tartar was good, and the steak was very tasty, though I found myself wishing for just a little bit more from it, specifically flavor wise. The cheesecake was solid, but compared to some of the traditional Basque cheesecakes we had elsewhere in the region, it didn’t quite stand out as much. Service was a little hit or miss throughout the night, and we did feel somewhat rushed. Our reservation was at 9 PM, and although the restaurant opened at 8, we were informed around an hour and a half later that we needed to start wrapping up. Definitely had to speed-finish the wine a bit. One thing to note for visitors: transportation can be tricky. The bus only runs until a certain time and there are no Ubers available. The restaurant kindly called us a cab, but the meter already started at €12 and the ride back to San Sebastián ended up costing over €60. Not the restaurant’s fault at all, just something worth planning ahead for. Overall, we’re still very grateful for the experience and would recommend it just wanted to share a balanced review for future visitors.

9/10 We came to Tolosa specifically for @Casajulian — a small town, a big reputation, and currently #6 on the World’s 101 Best Steak Restaurants list. The reason to come here is, of course, Txuleta: The standard €100/kg option but we went for the more mature selection at €125/kg. The meat itself was very good: deep flavour, great texture and that beautiful combination of fat, smoke and aged beef that makes Basque parrilla so addictive. My only criticism was the cooking — slightly under for my preference. Nothing dramatic, but with a product at this level, I expect the fire and timing to be absolutely precise. The pimientos rojos served with the meat were outstanding — honestly, one of the best. The asparagus was good, but the grilled leek with caramelised nuts and its sauce was a real highlight (€18/each). They also started with a complimentary bone broth. The wine list is also quite strong, But then came the surprise. The San Sebastián cheesecake. We ordered one. Then we ordered another. 😄That should tell you enough.

Casa Julián was probably the best lunch I’ve ever had in my life. The expectations were sky-high. It was one of the first reservations I made when planning the trip, and somehow it still exceeded them. And for anyone overthinking the logistics: just take the train from San Sebastián. It’s super easy. Some reviews make getting there sound like an expedition for absolutely no reason. Casa Julián is famous for beef, and the steak was incredible. We had the money seat in the house, right next to the grill, close enough to hear the fat crackle, the salt spill onto the floor, and smell the sizzlign steaks. A massive stack of beef sat beside us for lunch service, all deep red meat with beautiful yellow fat. It was primal, theatrical, and exactly what you want from a place like this. But the vegetables were what made the meal extraordinary. We ordered basically every seasonal vegetable they had, and every one was perfect. I’m picky about vegetables, and these were treated with the same seriousness and precision as the beef. The white asparagus was sublime. The leeks were rich and sweet, almost like French onion soup in vegetable form. The red peppers had charred, crispy edges and deep sweetness at the center. The artichoke was tender, earthy, and beautifully simple. Nothing felt like a side dish. Each plate had its own reason to exist. The room itself feels untouched since 1951: dark wood, dim light, old bottles lining the shelves, giant steaks by the entrance, a little dust in the corners. Not staged. Not precious. Just alive with history. The service was excellent, and having Château Margaux by the glass at lunch felt almost absurd. Everything was a 10 out of 10. I left thinking, yeah, that was the greatest lunch I’ve ever had. Casa Julián completely lives up to the hype. World class.

The acoustics inside are excellent, it’s full of people but not loud. The food is exceptional, mushrooms, peppers, tomatoes and steak were very very good. The peppers in particular are a highlight. We relied on the servers recommendations for wines, both of which were lovely. Overall it was worth the visit and will be hard to beat.

A special steak place that is one of the best restaurants in the world, hidden in the middle of nowhere. Appetizers amazing, asparagus, tartare, seasonal mushrooms, soup! Peppers amazing, and the staks are out of this world. Wine selection amazing also! Above 100 Euros pp but worth every penny!
